Why Work Values Matter

First of all, what are work values?

Work values are your beliefs and ideas surrounding your job. They are things that are important to you when it comes to yourself and your working environment. Work values drive you to do your work, act as your motivating force and play a key role in your productivity.

So how do you figure out what your work values are?

Think about what’s important to you and how that applies to your career. Of course, how much money you can earn is a huge factor, but other factors are important also. Money is great, but maybe you’re a person who would prefer a job that offers health-care benefits or a work-life balance, even if it meant forgoing a higher paycheck. Perhaps you value a work environment where you receive recognition for your contribution and constant feedback. On the contrary, you might value a work environment that is autonomous where you get to work at a pace that suits you. These are the things you should think about when deciding which job to apply to or which offer you should take.

Why are work values so important anyways?

Since choosing a career is a tough decision, it should be made with care as its your future after all. Your work values are a great determinant in deciding what move is best for you. As cheesy as it sounds, you should love what you do and if not love, you shouldn’t dread having to go to work every day. The place you decide to spend a good chunk of your career should share your values. While not every job you find will satisfy all of your work values, their goals, culture and environment should be in line with what you feel is important in order for you to be your most productive and happy self.

It is beneficial to figure out what your work values are, and in this way,  you can end up in a position best suited for you. So, take some time and think about what you value the most and how that applies to your prospective career or even a job you’re currently applying for.

Best of luck!
