Making the Most of a Work Term

Monday October 3rd 2016 - Michael B

Being a co-op student is a privilege, and with that privilege comes great opportunities. Each and every work term is an opportunity for students to gain knowledge, hone their skills and develop their professional network. Now, we wouldn’t want any of these opportunities to go to waste, so here are a few ways to make the most of a co-op work term:

1. Stay Focused

For some students, a full work term will be the longest that they have worked in a single (full time) position. That being said, it is important to stay focused and set goals for yourself. What do you want to achieve in those 4 months? Or 8 months? Stay focused on those goals and take steps towards achieving them every chance you get.

2. Ask Questions

Never forget that you are there to learn. Employers and/or supervisors know and want you to gain as much as you can from your time there. Never be afraid to ask questions as there is no such thing as a stupid question!

3. Get Involved

If you are ever presented with an opportunity to attend any networking events, workshops, or conferences on behalf of the company, take it. These opportunities do not come around often, and the experience and connections gained are invaluable.

4. Stay Connected

It is very important to take all your experiences from work and bring them with you. Just because the work term is coming to an end or has already ended, does not mean it is over. Maintaining all the connections you have made will prove to be very valuable as undergrad comes to an end and it is time to join the workforce.

These are just a few pointers that will help ensure you make the most of your work terms. The opportunities out there are endless, it’s up to you to go out there and get them!

Best of luck to all,

Michael
